Abbey of Villers-la-Ville
Exceptional heritage of Wallonia
Founded in 1146, the abbey of Villers-la-ville constitutes one of the most prestigious testimonies of Cistercian monk life.
The abbey reflects all of the styles of architecture that ensued in our lands. A vast cloister built in the 13th century is located at the center of the monastery. All around it are buildings developed by the religious devotees, for prayer and contemplation but also for manual activities.
Abandoned by the monks in 1796 following a pillage, nature took over and the Abbey slowly acquired its current state.
Its majestic ruins and the romantic ambiance of the place inspired more than one artist and writer.
The abbey mill today harbors exhibit spaces and is a place of restoration. All year long, the ruins site welcomes events for a large public, family events, exhibits, conferences, concerts and outdoor theater.
