Look at that old building on the other side of the avenue with its turrets rising up in front of you. It's in this magnificent building that, every day, I carry out the duties that the electorate has asked me to do. In fact, it's the current seat of political life in Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve. You can find my offices here, as well as those of the town councillors and the Town Council Chamber.
This building has been subject to numerous changes since it was built. It was erected in 1881 ont the Avenue des Combattants and at the time housed the town's schools. At the beginning of the 2000's, the town centre was greatly expanded : housing, services, shops and a shopping centre formed a complex here with matching architecture.
Following this new urban landscape, the townhall seemed old fashioned not very suitable for persons with reduced mobility. Which is why, since 2014, it has undergone major renovation.
Date created
1881
Function
Seat of political life, it houses the offices of the mayor and councillors as well as the Town Council Chamber, which is also where weddings are celebrated. A new council chamber was built in 2014 as an extension to the rear of the main building.
Characteristics
- The Town Hall was inspired the functionalist style started in 1840.
- The domes on top of the 2 turrets give a very characteristic appearance to this administrative building.
To begin with
- The Town Council also housed the local schools for Ottignies (boys and girls).
- In 1982, its steps replaced the small garden where the traditional gun carriage, a trophy of the First World War, was placed.
The hidden side
Since 2003, the local authority services have also been housed in the Coeur de Ville buildings, along with the CPAS (the public centre for social welfare) and the AVIQ (the Wallonian agency for the inclusion of disabled persons).
