Saint-Rémi Church

Saint-Rémi Church

I've been coming to this church all my life and because I live in the château nextdoor it makes it easier. At the time, this parish extended over the whole town. The church standing before you is no longer anything like the original building. In fact, we're told that a fire partially destroyed it around 1725. In a classical style, in brick and ferruginous sandstone, the current building does not look so magnificent. If you go through the door however, you'll be able to admire the stained-glass windows depicting several saints and the Louis XVI-style side altars. Who would have thought it?

Date created

The parish has been in existence since the 13th century, the current church was rebuilt in 1785 following a fire that ravaged it in 1725.

Function

Catholic worship place.

Characteristics

  • The church and its presbytery have been listed since 1952.
  • Classical architecture.
  • The church was built from brick but has the special feature of the use of superb blocks of ferruginous sandstone around the foundation wall, the corner ties and the framework of the bays: this material gives the building its complete originality and its colouring.
  • Its frontage is 17 metres wide and 22 metres along its sides.
  • The presbytery is a comfortable building with a double shell in the classical style. The jambs and key of the entrance door on the side of the Avenue des Combattants form a Louis XVI-style decoration.

To begin with

  • The sanctuary was surrounded by the traditional parish churchyard until 1905. The church's square was named “Place de l'Église“ by the local inhabitants, without bothering with the official naming system which did not give it any particular name.
  • In 1972, at the start of the UCLouvain's academic year in Louvain-la-Neuve, the interior of the nave was completely restored under the direction of Professor Raymond Lemaire.

To see

  • The gravestones on the frontage
  • At the moment you can admire some remarkable items of furniture: the main altar by Michael Taylor, a gothic Christ of the 17th century and two confessionals from the end of the 17th century.
