Biéreau and Bruyères districts

Biéreau

The Biéreau District was the first district built in Louvain-la-Neuve (1971-73).  There is a residential area and an academic area, as well as the Cyclotron (the most powerful particle accelerator in Western Europe in its category, which reaches 100 million electron volts) are located here.  The residential area is located around the old Brabant farm of Biéreau.  The Biéreau Trail stretches before the farm, a path that in the past connected Biéreau to Lauzelle. The farmers made use of it to lead their herds to the valley.

Bruyères

The Bruyères District is made up of numerous collective housing options, including “kots” (dorms) for students, and community apartments.  This district was built to meet the high student demand.  It is bordered to the north by the lake of Louvain-la-Neuve.  Single family and collective city housing can be found in the surrounding area.  The south end of the district is extended by a new subdivision including single family homes and apartment buildings.
